India's Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir is having a tough time in the Test format. Under him, India is yet to secure a series win against any major team such as the SENA countries. Amidst all the backlash being faced by him, a legendary Indian cricketer has stepped up in his favour.

The Indian team is making new lows in the Test format. And it has been possible with the team going through a transition phase, with Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach. His record in the Test format has not been favourable to the Indian team, with India losing more games than over the last one year.

India has suffered two consecutive series losses against SENA countries at home. It all started with the whitewash against New Zealand by 3-0. And now, India has lost another home series against South Africa, which marks their first loss against them at home in 25 years. Every cricket analyst and former player has voiced their opinions against Gautam Gambhir, except one.

1. Gavaskar Backs Gambhir

After India had lost the series, all the spotlight went on Gautam Gambhir. Despite the team going through a transition phase, it has not been able to even end the games in a draw in the home conditions. This has put down a number of questions on Gautam Gambhir as a Head Coach, and his future in the team in the Test format. However, Sunil Gavaskar Gambhir lately.

He said,“He's a coach. The coach can prepare a team… But it's out there in the middle that the players have to deliver. Now, to those who are asking for him to be held accountable, my counter-question is: what did you do when India won the Champions Trophy under him? What did you do when India won the Asia Cup under him?”

He further continued , “Did you say then, you're asking for a sacking now, did you say then that he should be given an extended contract, a contract for life for one day cricket and for T20 cricket? You didn't say that. It's only when a team doesn't do well you look at the coach.”

Sunil Gavaskar also said that under Gambhir, India is doing well in the white ball matches. He also led Kolkata Knight Riders to win IPL 2024, and India to win Champions Trophy 2025 and Asia Cup 2025. But Gavaskar didn't like the idea of the Indian team having different coaches for different formats of the game.

“Not necessarily. You have coaches, for example, Brendan McCullum is a coach for all three formats for England. A lot of countries have a coach who is there for all formats. But we tend to only look and point a finger at somebody when the team has lost. You're not prepared to give him credit.”

Gavaskar also backed Gambhir on not receiving the credit for India's trophy wins. He said,“If you're not prepared to give him credit for the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup win, then please tell me why you want to blame him for the team out there on that 22-yard, not doing well. Why are you blaming him?”

2. Gambhir Gets a Chance

After consecutive series losses by the Indian team at its own home ground, it is sure that Gautam Gambhir has been put under scrutiny. The BCCI officials also said that they won't be taking any strict decision on Gautam Gambhir's future as the Head Coach in the near future. So, he is likely to continue as till 2027, which is mentioned in his contract.

As India has achieved success with Gautam Gambhir in the limited overs, they also look to do the same in the Test format. With Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach, India has won the Champions Trophy 2025 being undefeated. Along with that, he also helped the team to win the Asia Cup 2025 with a young side, and take the title back home.

But in the Test format, Gautam Gambhir's success has been less. He has only led India to win series against Bangladesh and the West Indies, and getting a draw against England. But, India has also suffered some tremendous losses, losing home series against New Zealand and South Africa with a whitewash, and losing to Australia by 3-1.
