The Ashes has banter both on and off the field. While England held the upper hand on the field, not allowing Australia to settle in their innings, they will be entering the second day with high confidence levels. But at the same time, Monty Panesar hit back at Steve Smith in the best way possible.

The Ashes was a banger on Day One, with the bowlers holding an edge. Watching Mitchell Starc take a seven-wicket haul and Ben Stokes taking a five-wicket haul has impressed the fans to a great extent. But The Ashes is always incomplete without any or former players.

This also happened between Monty Panesar and the Australian captain, Steve Smith. Recently, Smith had reacted to Monty Panesar by targeting him for the sandpaper gate. After his reply, Panesar has now replied to Smith yet again, targeting him on his sandpaper gate scandal which banned him for months.

1. Banter Begins

The Ashes brings in a lot of banter between both of the teams even before the tournament begins. And this also happened between Monty Panesar and Steve Smith. As soon as Panesar got to know that Smith will be leading Australia in the first Test, he told the English fans and media reporters to target Smith on his

Before the match, Steve Smith was present in a Press Conference. He was asked a number of things about the game like the preferred team combinations, strategies and a lot more. But eventually, the reporter also asked about his replies to the actions by Panesar.

“I am going to go off topic here, who in the room has seen Mastermind, and Monty Panesar on that? Any of you? Those of you that have will understand where I am coming from. If you have not, do yourself a favour because it is pretty comical. Anyone that believes that Athens is in Germany, that is a start, or that Oliver Twist is a season of the year and America is a city. It does not really bother me, those comments. That is as far as I will go with that one.”

It can be said that Smith has done some research on Panesar before coming out for the interview. He was able to answer all what Panesar had said in the show, the Mastermind. This was a great reply by the Australian batsman, as fans waited to see what Monty Panesar had in store for Steve Smith.

2. Panesar Replies

And finally, just in time for the first Test, Monty Panesar has replied to Steve Smith. His replies have been all over the internet, with fans wondering that the banter on the field is not as good as the banter which is going off the field. Panesar was present in a TV show, where he thought of

“We’ve both made mistakes. I made mine on a quiz show, he made his on a cricket field. I’ve had some great moments for England and I’ve had shockers, and he’s had some great moments for Australia and he’s obviously had a very big shocker in South Africa. Look, I know I’m guilty of bad general knowledge but not ball-tampering. And I’ll take that everyday.”

He further said,“What makes it more sort of pleasing is that the night before the Test match, he’s watching my Mastermind clips, memorising the questions and the answers. And it kind of feels like England are already in his head and I can rattle the Aussies from sitting on my sofa. Because he’s done it in this way, I think he’s kind of opened up now for the England boys to really sort of go hard at him.”

3. England Gets the Edge

The Ashes has also begun amidst the banter between Steve Smith and Monty Panesar. And England are standing tall in the game after day one. The team had won the toss and they had decided to bat first in this game. Mitchell Starc starred for Australia in the first innings, taking 7 wickets, and for just 172.

Just when Australia thought they had an upper hand in the game, England made a comeback. The team took early wickets with the help of Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse. And Ben Stokes was able to change the game fully to their favour, as he took a five-wicket haul by the end of the day. Now, England has an edge, as Australia stands at the score of 123/9.
