The Ashes day one have been nothing short of a spectacle. Australia and England have given their best to this game, but only with the ball. With England having an upper hand as they head into the Day 2, there are a number of records which have been broken in just one day.
The Ashes have now started and the first day was no short of a thriller for the fans. As Australia took the upper hand in the first two sessions of the game, the last session went to England. Batting first, England was able to score 172 runs in its first innings
Following this, fans had expected Australia to give its best in the second innings of the game. But the team is now hanging on a thread, as they stand at 123 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. With the tail end, how far can Australia try to end England's lead on day two. On the first day there were a number of records being made by both teams.
1. England's Second Shortest Innings
The match didn't go well for England and its Bazball approach. As quick as the team was able to score runs, they were also losing wickets at the same pace. Due to this reason, England was bowled all out for just 172 runs, and Australia took to bowl out England at this total.
This is the second shortest innings by England in Ashes cricket. They have also registered a similar record which came back in 1887, making it an incident which repeated after centuries. At that time, England was only able while batting for 35.3 overs in the game.
The scores have been better this time, but England took much less overs. Before this also, the team has been bowled out against Australia within 50 overs on several occasions, but this match has been record breaking. And it can also be said that this all happened due to Mitchell Starc, who took 7 wickets.
2. Most Wickets in a Day at Perth
The match between England and Australia has broken yet another record on day one. On the first day of the game, a massive total of 19 wickets had fallen down. This is the highest number of wickets coming down in the first day of the Test match at the Optus Stadium in Perth. The wicket has been good for the bowlers, but it to be this good.
Before, this record was held by the match between India and Australia. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25, a whopping total of 17 wickets were dropped on day one. But the match between England and Australia broke this record by 2 wickets, with Stokes striking well in the end. Stokes with 5 wickets and Starc with 7 wickets played the main role.
3. Stokes Dismissed by Starc for 10th Time
The battle between Ben Stokes and Mitchell Starc also saw a record to be made. Ben Stokes was once again dismissed by Mitchell Starc with an impressive yorker delivery. This ball was enough to remind fans of what had happened when England and Australia in the 2019 World Cup.
With this, Ben Stokes has now been dismissed by Mitchell Starc for a massive total of 10 times in the Test format. Both of these players have met each other in 22 innings and Stokes has only managed to score 190 runs for the team. However, Starc has managed to take his wicket on 10 occasions.
4. Starc's Career Best Figures
Not all the records broken on day one were held by the other players, some of them even went on to break their own records. And this was done by Mitchell Starc in the first innings of the game. He was able to register an impressive six-wicket haul in the last test match , with figures of 6/9.
But this time in the match against England, Starc broke the record of his own. He was able to take seven wickets in the first innings of the game, while conceding just 58 runs for the team.
