The fourth edition of the Women's Premier League is about to commence soon. For the first time in the history of the tournament, it will be going through a Mega Auction before the season. The auction will be taking place on 27 November, as all the teams will be eager to create their best squad
But at the same time, there are some tentative dates of the tournament which have been revealed. According to some reports, the WPL will be starting within the next two months, and last hardly for a month. This makes things even more interesting for the fans, watching their favourite franchises go against each other.
1. WPL 2026
The Women's Premier League 2026 is expected to be a historic season. This is for the very first time in the tournament that all teams would be going through a Mega auction. And fans have already seen several changes in the squads with the retention, which makes them think
The next edition of the Women's Premier League is likely to commence on 7 January. And the tournament will last hardly a month, with the finals being scheduled for 3 February (probable). However, it should be noted that these dates are according to the reports and nothing is confirmed as of now
Along with that, the probable which will be hosting the next edition have also been revealed in the reports. Mumbai and Baroda are the likely places where all the matches of the tournament will be played. This is less than the number of venues for the previous season. And one reason for the same can also be the Bengaluru stampede, due to which the venue has been deemed as unsafe to host matches.
The choice of venues is reportedly being just two, as Mumbai and Baroda come out as the hosts. Still, fans are recommended to wait for an official confirmation from the WPL management about the same. Reports also say that the dates and venue of the next season will be announced just a day before the Mega Auction.
2. Retention & Purse
Before the Women's Premier League begins, teams will be going against each other in the mega auction. It will be a major revamp for all the squads in the next season, as the tournament gets its first mega auction. A few weeks ago, teams had announced the list of players they had chosen to retain for the upcoming auction.
Retained Players for Each Team:
- Delhi Capitals: Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Verma, Annabel Sutherland, Marizanne Kapp, Niki Prasad
- Gujarat Giants: Ashleigh Gardner, Beth Mooney
- Mumbai Indians: Natalie Sciver, Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews, Amanjot Kaur, G Kamalini
- Royal Challengers Bengaluru: Smriti Mandhana, Richa Ghosh, Ellyse Perry, Shreyanka Patil
- UP Warriorz: Shweta Sehrawat
UP Warriorz will be entering the Mega Auction with the highest purse. With Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru retaining most of their top players, it remains to be seen whom they will be targeting in the upcoming auction. Delhi and Mumbai have utilised all of their retention due to which they are left with no RTM Cards for the same.
3. Recap of WPL 2025
The Women's Premier League 2025 edition was like no other. Royal Challengers Bengaluru entered as the defending champions of the tournament. Fans had started to wonder whether RCB can win consecutive titles in the WPL, or will it be another tough competition between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals.
RCB Women had a great start to the tournament, but Mumbai Indians were able to capitalise on their momentum. And the downward momentum of RCB was utilised by the other teams to a great extent. After all the games, Delhi Capitals finished at the top of the table once again, with
Mumbai Indians went against Gujarat Giants in the Eliminator game, winning it by 47 runs. Later, it was Delhi Capitals against Mumbai Indians once again in the finals. This time the clash was a lot close, as Mumbai Indians ended up winning the game by a bare margin of 8 runs, winning their second title.
