Kolkata Knight Riders have retained their core group including Rinku Singh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Sunil Narine, Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy. The franchise took a major step by releasing Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer. KKR now enters the auction with a strong purse of Rs 64.3 crore.

The Kolkata Knight Riders, champions in 2012, 2014, and 2024, have taken a bold and unexpected step as they prepare for IPL 2026 and the franchise has chosen to shake things up with a fresh set of retentions and releases, and the list has immediately become a talking point among supporters. Many followers did not anticipate such sweeping changes, but the decisions clearly show that the management is looking for a fresh start after a difficult season and in the previous campaign, KKR were led by Ajinkya Rahane and unfortunately struggled to find any sort of consistency.

The team finished eighth on the points table, well outside the race for the playoffs, which was a huge disappointment for a side with such a strong history in the league. Out of the fourteen matches they played, they won only five, and at no stage did they look settled. Several of their trusted performers could not find their best touch, which left the team short of match-winning contributions throughout the season. Because of this overall dip, fans had been expecting changes, but the final retention list still managed to surprise many. The choices made by the franchise suggest a clear intention to rebuild the core of the team and move ahead with a stronger, more focused approach.
