India's unreal downfall in the Test format continues under the GG era. The team has now suffered with yet another whitewash at home, losing the series against South Africa. Following the series loss, the Indian Head Coach finally spoke in the conference.
There was a time when defeating India at home was a challenge for every team. But now, it has been a lot easier, with India losing its last two home series against SENA teams in a whitewash. Things have not gone good ever since the team had gone against New Zealand in the home series
Now against South Africa, India had suffered yet another series loss at home. This also marks the team's 5th loss in its last 7 Test matches played. The fans and even the BCCI management would be having a lot of questions on this loss to the team and the Head Coach. And finally, Gautam Gambhir has reacted to the horrific series loss against South Africa.
The last few series at home have not been good for the Indian team. First, the team lost its series against New Zealand, which marked their first series loss at home in 12 years. Following this, India has also lost yet another home series, this time against South Africa. Moreover, the Proteas have in India after 25 years.
Gautam Gambhir was present in the Press Conference, where a number of questions were raised on him. He was also asked about his future with the team in the Test format. Such series losses might have also suggested the BCCI to do some scrutiny to the team in the Test format, and its coaching department.
, “It is for the BCCI to decide. I have said this before as well, Indian cricket is important, I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England, won the Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning. Blame lies with everyone, starts with me.”
He also talked about the loss which the team has suffered. India didn't even reach close to a win in the series against South Africa, which added more to their sufferings. The reporters also asked about the main reasons why India had lost the series against South Africa despite playing at home.
, “We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don't blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won't do it going forward. You don't need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers to play Test cricket. What we need is tough characters with limited skills. They make good Test cricketers.”
The reporters also asked what should be done to make the Indian team better in the Test format. To this, the Head Coach said,“Start prioritising Test cricket, if you are really serious about Test cricket. If you are serious about Test cricket in India, a collective effort is required. You cannot only blame only players or a certain individual.”
The Indian team has been making records in the Test format with Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach. But it is not the good records which the team has been making. They are breaking the good records which were already present for India in the longest format of the game. The team has secured two series wins under Gautam Gambhir, which are Bangladesh and West Indies.
It all started with the home series against New Zealand in 2024. India went on to lose all three games against New Zealand, getting their first ever whitewash in a three-match home series. Before this series, no other team had ever whitewashed India in a three-match series at home. Following this, India also lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the very first time since 2015.
India in Tests with Gautam Gambhir as Head Coach:
India was able to do well in its next two series against England and the West Indies. But the woes continued as the team went against South Africa at home for a two-match Test series. India was not able to win the series against South Africa at home, losing their first series against them at home since 2000.
