Melbourne Stars beat Hobart Hurricanes by 37 runs in the Women’s Big Bash League in Melbourne on Wednesday. Amy Jones’ half-century took the Stars to a competitive total of 151/6 before left-arm spinner Sophie Day turned the game in the home side’s favour with a four-wicket haul.

‌Melbourne Stars moved to second in the Women’s Big Bash League 2025 with a comprehensive 37-run win over Hobart Hurricanes in Melbourne on Wednesday. Amy Jones and Sophie Day were the architects of the home side’s third win on the trot, as they moved to within a point of table-toppers Hurricanes with a game in hand.

After being put into bat at the Junction Oval, the Stars had a slow start, losing opener Rhys McKenna, to reach 23/1 at the end of the four-over powerplay. Though a 52-run partnership between Meg Lanning and Amy Jones for the second wicket steadied the Stars’ ship, a mini-collapse saw them lose three wickets for just 20 runs to be placed at 91/4 in the 14th over. However, Jones and Danielle Gibson ensured that the home side hit 55 runs in the last six overs to end at 151/6. The wicketkeeper-batter hit six fours and a six during her 40-ball 59, while Gibson gave the final push, scoring 39 runs off 27 balls, which included five fours and a six. Meanwhile, medium pacer Nicola Carey was the pick among the Hurricanes’ bowlers with a spell of 2/29 in four overs.

In return, the Hurricanes’ lineup fell like a pack of cards, first being reduced to 59/6 before being bowled out for a paltry 114 runs with more than three overs to spare. Captain Elyse Villani and Nat Sciver-Brunt stood out for the visitors in an otherwise shoddy display with the bat. Villani top-scored for the side with a 21-ball 38, hitting three fours and two sixes, while Sciver-Brunt made 27 off 21 balls. Left-arm spinner Day had an impressive outing, picking up 4/17 in 3.2 overs, while the medium pace duo of Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland had two wickets to their name.
