The Pakistan Super League might not be the same in the next edition. As the tensions between the PSL management and Multan Sultans grow, none of these parties have backed down. And now, it seems that Multan Sultans could end its journey in the tournament.
Don't be shocked if you see one team less in the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League. The tensions between Multan Sultans and the PSL Management has strained to a great extent. With no parties likely to back down in this battle, there are chances that Multan Sultans might in the PSL.
It has also been reported that the owner of the team has decided to call off the team's journey in the tournament. With the tensions between him and the PSL management not being solved, the decision of the team pulling off from the tournament could come anytime. It will also be intense to see which team replaces them in the next edition.
Multan Sultans had been owned by Ali Khan Tareen in the Pakistan Super League. But in a shocking development, the owner of the team has decided to exit the tournament, leaving the team without any owners. He had been involved in a clash with the PSL management and for a long time.
Recently, Ali Khan Tareen confirmed his exit from the tournament. He wrote,“I know I'm not everyone's cup of tea, and I'm okay with that. But I have always been honest and I have always spoken my mind. I never learned how to play it safe or just play along. That simply isn't who I am. And if staying means compromising those principles there is only one choice I can make. I would rather lose this team while standing on my feet than run it from my knees. So, this is goodbye.”
Over the last few months, it was clear that Ali Tareen was unhappy with the management of the tournament. He even raised some questions to the PCB and PSL management, which led to strained relations between these two parties. However, it should also be noted that the contract of the franchise has not been suspended or terminated, putting the team without any owners.
The story between Ali Khan Tareen and PSL management goes back over the last few years. Tareen has openly talked about the flaws which have been pertaining in the PSL management, and criticised the key issues of the tournament. Such criticisms were made by the Multan Sultans owner platforms and even interviews.
He cited issues such as lack of transparency, poor communication, and the planning of the tournament being mediocre. Tareen even revealed that he tried to communicate with the management internally. He had sent them calls, messages, and emails about these issues but none of them was solved.
Eventually, the matter escalated in September 2025, when Ali Khan Tareen was given a show cause notice by the management. The PCB issued him a notice demanding for a public apology on the statements he had made previously. Along with that, they also threatened to terminate the franchise agreement and also from the tournament.
Ali Khan Tareen informed the fans about this by posting a video on his social media platforms. He laughed out at the notice sent by the PCB, and talked about the matter. By the end of the video, he also tore down the notice which had been sent to him by the PCB asking for a public apology.
Following this, the time for renewal of contract also came. But the management didn't allow Tareen to renew his contract and even denied offering him the Ernst & Young of the tournament. The valuation of the same was also not shared, but it should have happened as the franchise has neither been suspended or terminated.
A source said,“Since the franchise agreement had neither been suspended nor terminated, Multan Sultans was a compliant franchise. In this background, by not sharing EY reports as well as a fresh offer letter, the PCB was in breach of contract. Also, the cost of the EY valuation exercise was done through the PSL funds, and Multan Sultans had contributed to this exercise.”
