IND vs SA | Jumpy Jansen scars India with six scalps as Proteas end Day 3 with 314-run lead

Resuming on an overnight score of six for nil, India began Day 3 with authrity as KL Rahul spanked the fifth ball of the morning for a sparkling boundary through the covers. Yashasvi Jaiswal opened his boundary account a couple of overs later by lofting Marco Jansen for point, as the duo motored along despite some threatening deliveries from the towering pacer. The introduction of spin twins Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer onlu upped India's tempo, culminating in an 11-run Harmer over after the hosts ticked past 50. However, just three balls later Maharaj delivered the first blow with a ball that spit up furiously off the deck to have Rahul caught at slip for 22 and end the 65-run stand. Jaiswal carried on to bring up a first Test fifty against the Proteas and seemed set to take India through to Tea alongside Sai Sudharsan when plans went awry. The youngster half-heartedly prodded his bat at a Harmer popper and a diving Jansen completed the job at point, before Ryan Rickelton replicated the effort at short extra cover in the spinner's next over to dispatch Sudharsan. Stand-in skipper Rishabh Pant tried to sieze back momentum with a six off his very second ball but Dhruv Jurel could not execute like his senior compatriot and fell in the final over before the break to Jansen for an 11-ball duck, with India now reeling at 102/4.

The situation exacerbated further after the 20-minute breather as Pant charged down Jansen just nine balls into the session and nicked off caught behind, a couple of overs before Aiden Markram snatched a diving one-handed blinder in the cordon to dispatch Nitish Kumar Reddy. Jansen made it four for the game in his next over with another searing bumper against which Ravindra Jadeja failed to get his hands out of the way, as the Men in Blue slumped further to 122/7. With the tail thus exposed, all onus fell on Washington Sundar to save his team the blushes and the all-rounder looked the part as he countered against a riveting spell of bowling from the Jansen-Harmer duo to take India through to drinks. Just 33 runs came in the 17 overs followed as Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav retreated into shells to survive till Lunch with the score now 174/7, and South Africa's lead still over 300.

The stand grew further to 72 in the final session but with Sundar just two adrift of a half-century, a beautifully flighted delivery from Harmer froze the southpaw in his crease as he edged to Markram at slip. Kuldeep followed suit three overs later for a 134-ball stay for 19 before Jansen folded up the innings with Jasprit Bumrah's scalp to end with figures of 6/48.

South Africa chose not to enforce the follow on despite their 288-run lead as openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram played out the eight overs without much ado to end the day on 26/0.
