The ODI series between India and South Africa is all set to commence from 30 November. It will be intense for the fans to watch the heroes, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli back in action. The BCCI also announced the Indian squad for the ODI series, which had as compared to the team in Australia.
With Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer missing out due to injuries, KL Rahul has been named as the vice captain. And there were a few notable comebacks too in the Indian team, such as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, and a lot more. But there has also been one notable exclusion, which is of Sanju Samson.
Sanju Samson made his ODI debut for India back in 2021. He came in for having a magnificent record in the List A format, and was given a chance to play for the team at number four. In his debut game against Sri Lanka, Samson proved his worth by scoring 46 runs off 46 balls, putting India at a strong position.

Although India ended up losing the game, Samson had showcased that he deserves to be a part of the team in this format. This eventually led to Samson receiving more opportunities to play for India, as he went on to score runs consistently
Later, during the India tour of West Indies in 2022, Samson brought up his maiden half-century. While chasing the target of 312 in the second ODI, he went on to score 54 runs off 51 balls before being run out. This was his third ODI game, and Samson had already shown he could bring into the team.
With this, the consistency in opportunities started to grow for Sanju Samson. But he was not able to maintain this for long, as he got dropped from the Indian team after their last ODI tour of South Africa in 2023. Despite his good knocks in overseas conditions, it has been two years since his exclusion from the line-up.
Sanju Samson last played an ODI match for India in the series against South Africa. Now, two years after his last ODI series, he has still been excluded from the team when India is facing South Africa again. After India had finished as the runners-up in the 2023 World Cup, Samson with other wicket-keepers being rested.
In the third ODI game against South Africa, Samson showcased that he is not just a back-up wicket-keeper for the team. He went on to score 108 runs off 114 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes, putting India in a strong position. Arshdeep Singh took 4 wickets, while Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar took 2 wickets each, as India restricted South Africa to just 218 runs. India ended up winning this game, and Sanju Samson also won the POTM award for his century.

Rishabh Pant marks his comeback to the ODI format after a year, as he last played for the team in the ODI series against Sri Lanka in 2024. On the other hand, Dhruv Jurel has not played even a single ODI match for the Indian team, and has been selected as a back-up wicket-keeper.
