Ranji Trophy | Twitter in splits as fortunate Aryan Pandey continues charmed life courtesy of umpiring gaffe

Umpiring blunders can go either ways with the batter but Aryan Pandey surely benefitted during the Ranji Trophy game against Kerala in Indore. The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder was almost on his way back, after edging the ball to the wicketkeeper but the umpire thought otherwise to extend his stay.

‌After having Kerala on the mat at 105/6 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy game, Madhya Pradesh could not land the killer punch as the visitors fought to a respectable total of 281 in Indore. Baba Aparajith and Praveen AV scored gritty half-centuries and added 122 runs for the seventh wicket at Holkar Cricket Stadium to frustrate the home side.

And that reflected in their batting response too, slipping to 101/6 towards the end of the second day. Things would have gone worse for the hosts, if not for an umpiring error that allowed new batter Aryan Pandey to continue in the middle.

After scoring two runs off the first 18 balls, the MP all-rounder looked confident as he took a giant stride against left-arm spinner in the third delivery of the 45th over. But, the red cherry turned away viciously after pitching on a good length outside off stump, producing a noise as it passed the batter.

Kerala captain and wicketkeeper Mohammed Azharuddeen pouched the ball beautifully and instantly went up in celebration, in unison with the close-in fielders and the bowler. The batter, as is the natural instinct, immediately turned towards the keeper to check whether the catch was taken and moved away from the wicket to start his walk back.

Despite loud appeals from the Kerala players, the umpire did not budge as he tried to bring the players under control with his stern response. Pandey quickly turned back to see the umpire rule in the negative and stayed put beside the wicket.

Azharuddeen was shocked as he tried gesturing to the umpire that the batter had gloved it, with replays also showing that the nick had come just as the ball passed the glove. He pacified his players to go by the umpire’s decision as Pandey continued his charmed life at the crease.

Twitter was shocked as calls for DRS for all Ranji Trophy games became loud and evident on the social media.
