To become an elite athlete in a team sport, communication is paramount but a lack remains all too ubiquitous in pro cricket. Monday in the Women's Big Bash League was no different as two Hurricanes fielders managed to somehow save a boundary after a comical mix up that had the entire team in splits.
Hobart Hurricanes dominated proceedings at the Bellerive Oval right from the get-go after being asked to bat first. Openers Lizelle Lee and Danni Wyatt-Hodge set an exceptional foundation once again with a 61-run stand in just six overs before a rain-interruption trimmed the game down to 17 overs. Wyatt-Hodge converted her start to a 47-ball 71, becoming the editions highest run-getter in the process, to see the Hurricanes post 176/4, before Molly Strano ripped apart the Stars with a new ball spell and ended with dreamy figures of 5/16 from her three overs. However, it was not all smooth sailing for the veteran quuck in the field as she quickly became her team;s laughing stock after a hilarious miscommunication with teammate Natalie Sciver-Brunt.
Stars were down and out at 65/8 in the 11th over when Sasha Moloney pulled Heather Graham for wide outside off past short square leg albeit with unideal timing. Sciver-Brunt raced after the ball as it passed her inside the ring, while Strano at long fine leg also put on the burners to try and stop the ball dribbling away towards the boundary. However, the Kookaburra managed to keep them at bay till the very end, meaning only a despairing dive could save it from the ropes. In a hilarious lack of co-ordination, both Strano and Sciver-Brunt decided they would be the ones to put in the slide, and realized as soon as they took to the deck the mix-up that had occurred. Sciver-Brunt was already howling in laughter by the time she managed to scoop the ball back while Strano desperately tried to pull back from her attempt and only just managed to roll over and past the England skipper, the duo somehow managing to keep the opposition to two runs. Captain Ellyse Villaini could not believe what had just occurred as she too broke down in laughter, while Graham was pictured clutching her gut along with the chuckling batsmen.
Twitterati was thoroughly amused.
