There have been a lot of questions about Virat Kohli’s spot for the 2027 World Cup. But Kohli decided to answer it all with his batting performances for India in the first ODI against South Africa. After the game, Sitanshu Kotak, India's batting coach, talked about Kohli's style and 2027 World Cup.
The first ODI between India and South Africa has been a banger for the Indian fans. They were able to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli dominate for the team on a Sunday, which made the day for them. And the special highlight of the day was Virat Kohli, who still played in the team.
Kohli went on to score 135 runs for India in the match against South Africa. After the game, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak was present in a Press Conference, where he talked about Virat Kohli. Kotak emphasised on the form and experience which Kohli brings in the team, along with his availability for the 2027 World Cup.
It was a great day for the Indian batters and Sitanshu Kotak as well. The team had just gone through a whitewash against South Africa in the Test series due to the batting blunders. But now, they have been able to dominate the Proteas with the bat, and it is just the format
He was very happy in the Press Conference, looking at India's batting performances in the first ODI. There were a number of questions which were asked to Kotak, and he was able to respond to them all with courage and confidence. One question was also related to the availability of Virat Kohli in the Indian team for the 2027 World Cup.
, “In my opinion, there should be no such talks. Talking about things that are two years away, I don't think there is any point talking about such things. I don't think we are even talking about the 2027 World Cup. They (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) are contributing, which is great for the team.”
He further continued , “I don't know why do we need to look at all this. He (Kohli) is batting really well. I don't see any reason we need to talk about his future. Just the way he is batting, he is just brilliant. The way he is performing, the way his fitness is, there are no questions about anything.”
Sitanshu Kotak also loved the way in which Virat Kohli batted in the first ODI. He said, “It was an outstanding knock, obviously, he batted really well. He is, in the one day format, and all the other formats, he is a thoroughly outstanding player. He took responsibility, and the way he batted was really good. They are both experienced players, it is always great to have them. And the way they bat, today also, they got that partnership, all of it makes a huge difference.”
Virat Kohli also indirectly talked about his availability for the team in the 2027 World Cup. He said a lot of things in the post match interview, when he received the POTM award. There were some indirect questions asked by Harsha Bhogle on the availability of Virat Kohli
Virat said that his preparations have been fully mental for the game. As long as he is physically fit, he will be able to give his best to the Indian cricket team. Kohli also said that he will continue to play just one format of the Indian team even in the near future, with his eyes set on the 2027 World Cup.
Virat Kohli is not chasing records, the records are chasing him. And this has turned out to be true, as Virat Kohli went on to break dozens of records in the first ODI match against South Africa. It was not just a century, as this helped Virat Kohli to smash his 83rd Century in international cricket, to do so.
Along with that, it should be noted that Virat Kohli was able to score his 52nd ODI century. This has made Kohli the player with the most centuries across any format of the game. Earlier he tied for this record with Sachin Tendulkar, as both of them had scored 51 centuries in different formats of the game. It was also his 70th POTM award for the Indian team, as Kohli also scored 7000th international century in the history of the game.
