Rare dismissals do happen in the game, but some of them are so rare you might not have seen them. And one such incident has recently taken place in the Ranji Trophy. Lamabam Singh created a history by being out in the rarest way possible.

In cricket, there are several ways in which a batsman can be dismissed. They can be bowled, caught, given out on LBW, stumped, run out, and a lot more. Talking about rare dismissals, one could even think of a hit wicket as a chance, as this type of dismissal is in the game of cricket.

But recently in the Ranji Trophy match between Manipur and Meghalaya, fans saw a rare way of dismissal. What makes this dismissal rare is that it is not even counted as a wicket in the rules of the game. So, how did the umpire signalled out on the same and the batsman had no other options rather than just walk off?

1. Ashwin Explains Mystery Wicket

Ravichandran Ashwin explained this rare type of dismissal using his gully cricket experience. He told the fans that today he got out in a rare way in the history of the game. He first defended the ball in a classic manner and when he saw the ball reaching the stumps after connecting with his bat, Ashwin just panicked.

And out of this panic, he swept the ball away from the stumps thinking that now he is safe. But the thing that happened next might also have shocked Ashwin. He said that after the second connection with the ball, everyone ‘Out’ as if they were celebrating the wicket in a World Cup final.

Ashwin also said that this is the first time he got dismissed in this way in the game. And it also happened with Lamabam Singh in the Ranji Trophy match between Manipur and Meghalaya. However, Ashwin also mentioned that this type of wicket is out in gully cricket but not according to the actual laws of the game.

Manipur and Meghalaya were facing each other in the Ranji Trophy match, as Manipur were batting in the game. Lamabam was going against Aryan Bora, as he defended the ball. When the ball was going towards the stumps, he yet again to ensure that it didn't touch the stumps.

But he was given out for the same and had no other option rather than just walking away. An official also said that Singh connected with the ball for the second time when it headed towards the stumps, which was within the rules of the game. Despite this being in the game rules, he was given out by the umpires.

An official said,“He could've padded it away, but he chose to stop it with his bat and was immediately given out 'hit the ball twice' by umpire Dharmesh Bhardwaj. The batter walked off the moment Meghalaya appealed.”This wicket made things worse for Manipur, who were already having a collapse.

2. Other Batters to be Dismissed Like This

Lamabam Singh is not the only batsman to have gotten out in this way. However, he is the only batsman to have gotten out in this way in the last two decades. The last time when a batsman was dismissed in this way was during the Ranji Trophy 2005-06 edition.

And it was Dhruv Mahajan who got dismissed in this awkward manner. This was the first incident of any batsman being given out for hitting the ball twice in the 21st century. If this happens in international cricket, the batsman remains not out as even the fans have seen the players connect their bats twice with the ball from touching the stumps.

Apart from Lamabam Singh and Dhruv Mahajan, there are three other batsmen who have been dismissed in this way. These batsmen include Andhra's K Bavanna (1963-64), J&K's Shahid Parvez (1986-87) and Tamil Nadu's Anand George (1998-99).
