Australia had England in a spot of bother after reducing them to 134/6 in their second innings in the second Test in Brisbane. Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc scored crucial half-centuries to take Australia to 511, with the visitors still needing 43 more runs to make the hosts bat again.

‌Australia were on the verge of going 2-0 ahead in the ongoing Ashes series after having England on the mat at 134/6 in their second essay in Brisbane on Saturday. The pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Michael Neser all picked up two wickets to put the visitors in a spot of bother and still needing 43 runs to avoid an innings defeat at the Gabba.

Earlier, Australia extended their advantage after starting the day at 378/6 with overnight batter Alex Carey completing a quickfire half-century. The southpaw had six fours during his 69-ball 63 before Mitchell Starc took over to torment the visitors further with the bat. The left-arm pacer scored a patient fifty, hitting a total of 13 fours, before being dismissed for 77 in 141 balls. He also built a valueless 75-run stand with his fellow pace partner Scott Boland for the ninth wicket as the home side ended their innings at a mammoth 511.

The visitors, who started their innings with a 177-run deficit, were aggressive with the opening pair of Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley adding 43 runs in the first six overs to end the second session without losing a wicket. But the final period saw them go on freefall mode, with the top order batters guilty of gifting their wickets. Crawley and Ollie Pope offered easy return catches to Neser with uppish shots, while Joe Root chased down a wide half volley to nick it to the keeper. England will now have all their hopes pinned down to captain Ben Stokes, who ended the day in the company of Will Jacks, with the hosts left with just four wickets and two full days of play.
