Rajasthan Royals continue to prepare themselves for the IPL 2026 season. The team has made some massive changes to their line-up, as they traded their captain to Chennai Super Kings. Now, they have made yet another anticipated announcement for the fans to remember.
Rajasthan Royals have their Mission IPL 2026 activated, for which the team has been making rapid moves. They were able to shock the world with the IPL Trade Window, getting Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to their line-up. There were some shocking releases too in the retention window, and fans thought that it was the end of the by the team.
But that was just the start for Rajasthan Royals. The team has now announced its new Head Coach for the upcoming IPL season, and it is a player who has previously coached in IPL. Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan captain, now joins Rajasthan Royals to help them win their second title in IPL 2026.
1. RR’s Coaching Turmoil
When India had won the T20 World Cup 2024, Rahul Dravid had his time as a Head Coach to come to an end. He was also asked to continue for another stint but he denied doing it, and several IPL teams approached him for the IPL 2025 season. Among them all, Rahul Dravid decided to have a reunion with Rajasthan Royals and joined them
Fans expected the team to come out on top this time, with Dravid returning to their coaching staff. He had just helped the Indian team to win the T20 World Cup, and taking a look at Rajasthan Royals line-up, it seemed possible. But the season came out to be terrible for the team, as they struggled to secure wins.
Rajasthan Royals finished 9th in the standings, marking it as one of their worst seasons lately. There were some tensions also within the team, related to the management. And there were issues related to the captaincy, with Riyan Parag being the captain of the team in place of Sanju Samson
Following the issues within the team, it all seemed to have calmed down after the IPL came to an end. But this was also where the serious troubles began for the team. Rahul Dravid, who became their Head Coach last year, ended up resigning from his post just a year after taking the same. This had put Rajasthan Royals without any head coach ahead of the next season.
2. Trade Window Moves
Rajasthan Royals were surely not having a head coach in their line-up ahead of the next season. Still, the team was able to pull off some impressive trades in the IPL trade window, which might have changed the entire scenario for the upcoming edition. For a long time, the team was involved in talks for a deal involving Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson.
This deal had seen a number of obstacles due to which it was unable to get finished. Still, just when the IPL retention list was about to be made, the deal between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings finally took place. At this point, Rajasthan Royals had decided to trade Sanju Samson to CSK, and took two players in his exchange. Rajasthan received Ravindra Jadeja and
This was a great addition to the team, as they have received two experienced T20 all-rounders. Along with that, Ravindra Jadeja was a part of Rajasthan Royals when the team had first won their IPL trophy. And maybe, having Jadeja back in their line-up could help Rajasthan Royals to win their second title.
3. Sangakkara Joins the Party
When fans thought that Rajasthan Royals had played all their cards in the IPL trade window, the team pulled out yet another card. They won't be going to the next season without any head coach, and they decided to appoint someone who is already experienced. There were a number of names coming to the team's mind, but they had to
And it was Kumar Sangakkara, one of the finest wicket-keeper batsmen of all time. This will be yet another happy reunion for Kumar Sangakkara and Rajasthan Royals, as he has been with the team for several years at this position. He had his stint with Rajasthan to come to an end after IPL 2024, which was also a good season
After having a dismal performance without Kumar Sangakkara, the team knew he was the missing piece. He has been announced as the new Head Coach of the team, being appointed once again. This was an announcement that no one could have expected, as there were no hints or rumours about the same.
