Ashes | Twitter reacts as Starc labels Snicko 'worst technology ever' after blatant gaffe shocks umpires

Snicko might be a little confused but it's got the spirit. The second day in Adelaide was embroiled in controversy as the Snicko committed an obvious gaffe that had even the on-field umpires in disbelief, with the likes of Mitchell Starc and Marnus Labuschagne not mincing their words.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins was left stunned by Snicko's workings on Day 2 of the Adelaide Ashes Test between England and Ashes

Australia inched ever closer to the Ashes on Day 2 of the third Test at the Adelaide Oval as England lost five wickets across the first two sessions, while still well over a couple hundred runs away from their first innings total of 371. Nathan Lyon proved gamechanger with two blows in his maiden over, but it was skipper Pat Cummins who inflicted the most damage with three scalps including the all-important wicket of Joe Root. Unfortunately however, the story of the day evolved to be the Snicko technology once again, much like the opening day of the encounter, as the application of the obviously flawed apparatus dipped to new unacceptable lows in the final session of play on Thursday.

Cummins took the ball in hand for the 44th over with Jamie Smith up against him and banged in a bumper that the wicket-keeper triumphantly smashed for a maximum. Nevertheless, the Aussie persisted with the plan, his second attempt a bit straighter which had Smith in all sorts of trouble. The youngster tried to ride the bounce and fend the ball away from in front of his face but he could not avoid his fate as the ball hit him and looped towards slip, where Usman Khawaja at slip tried to bag a low-hanger leaning forward. The umpires were unsure whether the ball had carried and went upstairs, where as per the process third umpire Chris Gaffaney first had to verify whether there was an edge at all. The replays rolled and clearly showed the Kookaburra rapping Smith's gloves, at which point the broadcast person duly moved on to check for the catch. However, Gaffaney insisted on following protocol by asking for Snicko, which turned out to be a big mistake. The under-fire technology showed no signs of sound as the ball passed the glove, but there was a significant spike at the point the red cherry was next to the helmet. After some contemplation, Gaffaney decided it was evidence enough to rule Sith not out and relayed the same to on-field umpire Nitin Menon. The Indian official was unsurprisingly not convinced and went over to ask Smith whether the ball had hit his helmet, presumably to oblige with the concussion protocols, which perplexed the two Englishmen given they knew the helmet was never in play. When Menon relayed the verdict to the Australian squadron, Marnus Labuschagne immediately let out a loud smirk while Travis Head looked around completely befuddled as the players surrounded the stumps. Mitchell Starc was clearly in a mood to let his feelings know, as he hollered, "Snicko needs to be sacked. That's the worst technology there is. They make a mistake the other day and they make another mistake today," referring to Alex Carey being wrongly given not out on Day 1. However, the clincher as always was Labuschagne's chirp, "(Smith's) got to get the doctor because his head's apparently got blown off."

Funnily enough, Khawaja's catch was never clean to begin with, meaning the correct decision was arrived upon even if advertently. Eventually, the umpires decided there was no need for a concussion test, which underlined just how farcical the decision was. Twitterati was lost for words, metaphorically.
