Fielding in the deep requires a specific skill set and composure, and Yashasvi Jaiswal realised it the tough way in the second ODI against South Africa in Raipur. The Indian opener’s horrific effort at long on gifted Aiden Markram an important life and six bonus runs during the run chase.

‌After being put in, India set South Africa a challenging target of 359 in the second ODI at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. Virat Kohli (102) scored his second century in two matches, while Ruturaj Gaikwad (105) hit his maiden ODI ton to help the side go past the 350-run mark.

The Proteas also started the chase on the front foot with Aiden Markram coming good despite Quinton de Kock’s early dismissal. The opener completed his half-century in the 16th over and also had a crucial partnership with captain Temba Bavuma as the visitors reached 97/1 at the end of the 17th over.

With Kuldeep coming in for his second over, Markram tried to put pressure back on the wrist spinner. The opener went back off a half-tracker from Kuldeep, pulling him in an attempt to clear the long on fence.

But the ball hit the toe end of his bat, bringing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was stationed at the long-on fence, into the picture. But the Indian opener messed up a straightforward chance parrying the ball over the fence for a six.

Though Jaiswal lined up correctly to pouch the ball, he tried to take it in the conventional style despite the ball coming at his chest level. That proved costly as the jump resulted in him hitting the ball with his fingers before it cleared the fence.

Twitter was in disbelief as an ordinary effort from the Indian opener ended up gifting a life to Markram, who looked in majestic touch.
