IND vs PAK | Twitter hysteric as umpires stop play for bug fumigation after Sana's naive efforts

Bad weather, great weather, flying insects, animals not flying -- cricket in the past has had to stop for almost every possible reason, yet fumigation is perhaps still new territory The Women's World Cup match between India and Pakistan was stopped briefly in Colombo to allow fumigation.

‌Pakistan put up a clinical bowling display at the R Premadasa Stadium on Sunday to restrict a power-packed Indian batting line-up under 250, after opting to bowl first in the group stage encounter. The rain politely stayed away from proceedings even though clouds still hovered around, allowing the game to go on uninterrupted through the first innings. Or at least such was the expectation looking at the weather, until the insect civilization decided to have a say in proceedings.

Ever since the game began, a huge swarm of flying termites were present at the venue easily visible on the camera. While initiially they were no more than a nuisance, the volume seeemed to kepe growing with time and by the time the first innings reached midpoint, they had started to impact play by getting in the players' eyesights. Spinner Nashra Sandhu seemed to be particularly troubled by them, causing skipper Fatima Sana to request the umpires for assistance during the 29th over. The officials allowed a subsitute fielder from the Pakistani dugout to bring out a spray, which Sana intently sprayed all around the wickets hoping to keep the termites at bay. But it made little difference to the state of play and four overs later, the umpires finally decided to take the players off altogether. In walked a man wearing a gas mask akin to ones in zombie movies with a huge gas cannister in hand and he ran around the field, spraying a gas to provide further relief from the bug problem.

His efforts seemed to have little effect as the players continued to be affected by the problem but the 15-minute break in proceedings certianly made for some interesting Twitterati discussions.

This is new!
