IND vs SA | Twitter reacts as Brevis shows no mercy to IPL skip Gaikwad with stupefying one-handed blinder

In the international arena and the elite level, there are no friends. As false and melodramatic as that may sound it does hold true in the heat of a battle, and Ruturaj Gaikwad swallowed the hard pill on Sunday when IPL teammate Dewald Brevis held onto a catch Jonty Rhodes would be proud of.

India seized momentum in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi after being asked to bat first with a resounding 136-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in just 109 deliveries courtesy of boundaries galore. By the time the former departed for 57 in the 22nd over, India had cruised to a strong platform of 161/2 and the stage was set for Ruturaj Gaikwad to make the most of his chance afforded as a result of Shreyas Iyer's injury. The youngster apprared jittery early on, keen to run every quick single and get to the other end, even while Kohli continued to dictate the tempo alongside him. It was only a matter of time before Gaikwad decided to join the party too, but the Proteas were all too ready to pounce.

On the third ball of the 27th over, Ottniel Baartman offered Gaikwad a hint of width on length and the Chennai Super Kings skipper was quick to latch on as he flayed a ferocious square cut in the gap between short backward point and cover. It was exactly the shot his IPL teammate Dewald Brevis had been stationed for, but it seemed there little that could be done with a ball travelling like a tracer buller. Yet, right out of a fever dream, Brevis leapt to his right and hung in the air, with an outstretched arm that somehow positioned itself perfectly for the Kookaburra to slam in and shut itself safe at the rate of knots.

Were it not for an ecstatic celebration involving Brevis wheeling around having dismissed his IPL captain, few would have realized the superhuman effot given the speed of the ball made it impossible to digest where it had ended up. Twitterati was quick to go bonkers.
