Hobart Hurricanes beat Perth Scorchers by seven wickets in a Women’s Big Bash League match in Hobart on Saturday. Half-centuries from Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge helped the home side ace a record chase of 187 at Bellerive Oval and go back to the top of the points table.

‌Nat Sciver-Brunt struck form at the right time to power Hobart Hurricanes to a seven-wicket win over Perth Scorchers in the Women’s Big Bash League in Hobart. The England skipper scored her first half-century in this edition, smashing 12 fours and a six, en route to a blistering 81 off just 48 balls to help the home side record the highest successful chase in the history of the competition. With that win, the Hurricanes went back above Melbourne Stars to the top of the WBBL 2025 points table.

After being put into bat at the Bellerive Oval, the Scorchers had a horrific start losing two wickets in Molly Strano’s first over with the score reading just four. However, captain Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney, who is playing her 150th WBBL match, calmed the nerves with a 66-run partnership for the third wicket. Though the New Zealand all-rounder departed to leave the visitors at 76/3 at the halfway stage, Mooney and Freya Kemp took the side past the 100-run mark. The England all-rounder hit four boundaries before being dismissed by her national skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt for a 22-ball 34 in the 15th over. But Paige Scholfield’s entertaining cameo (26 off 13) ensured that the side finished at a formidable 186/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Meanwhile, Mooney top-scored for the side with a 55-ball 75, hitting 10 fours during her knock. Strano was the home side’s best bowler with figures of 2/23 in three overs, with the England duo of Linsey Smith and Sciver-Brunt picking a wicket apiece.

In reply, opener Lizelle Lee started proceedings in aggressive fashion, with a six and a four in the first two overs before being dismissed by Devine in the last ball of the second over. However, Sciver-Brunt and her England mate Danni Wyatt-Hodge sent Scorchers on a leather hunt with a gargantuan partnership of 135 for the second wicket. The pair started slowly adding just 25 runs in their first four overs together but cut loose once they had their eyes in. Wyatt-Hodge was the early aggressor, reaching her half-century in 32 balls, in the 12th over but soon the England skipper shifted gears to outscore her partner. The all-rounder brought up her fifty in style, with a six off Amy Edgar in the 14th before smashing six fours in her next 11 balls. Though both Sciver-Brunt and Wyatt-Hodge departed in quick succession, it was too late for the Scorchers to make further inroads as the home side went past the target to finish at 189/3 with five balls to spare. Wyatt-Hodge had seven fours during her innings of 55 in 38 balls, while Lily Mills, Alana King, and Devine picked up a wicket each for the visitors.

Fielding units often fail to capitalise on mix ups between the batters and Hobart Hurricanes got added to the list during their WBBL game against Perth Scorchers. Lizelle Lee’s substandard relay throw to the bowling end left a lot to be desired as Freay kemp fortunately extended her stay.
