Even being mentioned in the same sentence as the ungodly talented AB de Villiers is bold praise, yet 'Baby AB' is a moniker Dewald Brevis has had since his teen years. The youngster continued to prove on Sunday why he deserves it as his onslaught left even the bowler Harshit Rana in awe.
South Africa stuttered early in their chase of 350 in the first ODI against India at JSCA Complex as Harshit Rana struck twice in his first over with the new ball before Arshdeep Singh sent Aiden Markram packing soon after. Kuldeep Yadav produced a pearler in the 15th over to further buckle the tourists down, leaving Dewald Brevis and Matthew Breetzke in charge of Proteas destiny. Both men came in with quickly growing reputations, but Brevis quickly showed why he was the one labelled as his country's brightest prodigy for years.
Brevis had already struck tow maximums enroute to a 15-ball 20 when Rana took the ball for his second spell in the 20th over as skipper KL Rahul hunted for a wicket. The right-arm quick steamed in from over the stumps and banged the ball down on length with a hint of width on offer. It was all the invitation Brevis needed as his lightning fast hands cut through the Kookaburra with egregious timing to send it racing through the outfield like a tracer bullet. Brevis could not help but laugh at the sheer velocity of the shot, and even Rana twirled his upper lip in admiration. However, the best was yet to come. Rana delivered a brilliant riposte with a sharp bumper that whistled past Brevis' face, followed by a ball at the stumps that was duly defended. Yet, the next one slid down leg just enough for Brevis to bring his bat down on the ball with fury and elegance all at once, sending the Kookaburra sailing into the Ranchi sky. Such exquisite was the connection that Brevis did not need to look up to see where the ball was headed, only breaking his pose to offer a guttural laugh in respect of his own brilliance.
Twitterati was mesmerized.
