New Zealand beat the West Indies by seven runs in the first ODI at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday. Daryl Mitchell’s century helped the visitors to a healthy 269/7 before Kyle Jamieson and Co restricted the visitors to eke out a narrow win and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

‌A Daryl Mitchell special powered New Zealand to a thrilling seven-run win against West Indies in the first ODI in Christchurch on Sunday. The Kiwi batter scored his sixth hundred in the 50-over format to take the home side to 269/7 before Kyle Jamieson led the Kiwis’ response with a three-wicket haul to pull off a narrow victory.

After being put in to bat at Hagley Oval, the Kiwis were rocked early with the twin dismissals of Rachin Ravindra and Will Young, in consecutive balls off Matthew Forde, in the seventh over. However, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell ensured that the side did not lose another wicket in the powerplay, reaching 39/2 at the end of 10 overs. The opener was unlucky to miss out on a half-century, with Justin Greaves dismissing him for 49 runs, after hitting seven fours and a six in his 58-ball knock. Though Tom Latham also departed shortly afterwards, Mitchell held the innings together from one end going past 50 for the third time in the last four ODIs. He was involved in a 69-run stand for the fifth wicket with Michael Bracewell before the latter fell for 35 in the 42nd over. The former Chennai Super Kings batter reached the three-figure mark with a boundary off Jayden Seales in the 46th over before being dismissed in the last over of the innings. He hit 12 fours and two sixes during his 118-ball 119, while an enterprising and unbeaten cameo from Zak Foulkes (22*) saw the Kiwis set a target of 270. For the Windies, Seales was their most successful bowler with a spell of 3/41 in nine overs while his new ball partner Forde had 2/55 in 10.

In return, the visitors lost opener John Campbell cheaply, with Kyle Jamieson dismissing him in the third over with the score reading just 10. Though Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty repaired the Windies’ innings with a 60-run partnership, they were guilty of playing too many dot balls, taking 18 overs together in the middle. With both batters departing in the gap of 27 deliveries, the visitors were left to score 183 at the halfway stage with seven wickets in hand. Captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford took the innings forward with a 51-run stand but Hope (37) and Roston Chase were back in the hut by the 40-over mark. Soon, Rutherford became Jamieson’s third victim as he left after hitting three fours and three sixes in his 61-ball 55. With 61 needed off the last 29 balls, the all-rounder duo of Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd batted out of their skin to keep the Windies in the hunt till the last over with the side needing 20 off the last six deliveries. Shepherd hit a six in the fourth ball off Jacob Duffy but the pacer bounced back to concede a solitary run in his last two. The pair added 53 runs during their unbeaten seventh wicket stand as the visitors ended their innings at 262/6. Greaves hit 38 off 24 balls, including three fours and a six, while Shepherd had a six and a four in his 19-ball 26. For the Kiwis, Jamieson was the pick among their bowlers with a spell of 3/52 in 10 overs.
