Mohammad Kaif has once again taken a dig at the Indian Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir. While India won the first game against South Africa, Kaif still has some questions on the coach and the Selectors. He thinks that Shami should have been a part of the team, which lacks pace bowling experience.

India had a great start to the ODI series against South Africa, as they won the first name by 17 runs. Although India had set a good target of 350, South Africa came way too close to chasing the same, with the team falling short of 17 runs. This shows that even though India was playing at its home ground, they

It can also be due to the fact that India is not having an experienced pace bowling attack in the ODI series. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj have been rested for the series, as chances were given to Arshdeep, Harshit, and Prasidh. After the first game, Mohammad Kaif has called out the BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and Head Coach Gautam Gambhir.

1. Kaif Calls out on Shami's Exclusion

With Siraj and Bumrah missing out on the ODI series, the youngsters have been given an opportunity. But they could have also been the reason for the loss if the game went either way for the Indian team. At one stage, even the pacers failed to take wickets for the team South Africa to score runs.

For this, Mohammad Kaif has taken over to his YouTube channel, speaking about the exclusion of Mohammed Shami. He last played a match for India back in 2025, which was during the Champions Trophy. Since then, he has been able to do well in the domestics, but to the Indian team.

Kaif said, “The question is valid. No matter what kind of pitch it is, a bowler like Shami does not care if it is flat. He has so much class that he finds ways to pick wickets there as well. I don't know why he is not playing still, because Bumrah and Siraj have been rested. The young pacers would also benefit from his presence. There is no senior pacer to tell the likes of Prasidh, Harshit, and Arshdeep what to do under pressure. India missed this.”

2. Kaif’s Praise for Harshit Rana

Harshit Rana made his comeback to the Indian team in the ODI format. He missed out on the Test series against South Africa but returned for the ODI series with a bang. Rana was able to take three wickets for the team in this game, the wickets of Ryan Rickelton, Quinton de Kock, and Dewald Brevis.

Kaif praised his performances , “Harshit Rana bowled on good lengths. He was bowling short, but here he kept his lengths ahead. He made solid use of the new ball. Rohit and Virat were also giving him advice on the field. This is what I am saying, youngsters will do well under seniors, and this has always been the case with Indian cricket.”

He also praised Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for giving inputs to the bowlers. Kaif further said, “How many times we saw Virat going and talking to Arshdeep and Prasidh. Rohit was giving inputs too. They want India to win even if they are not leading. They don't care about credit. They spoke a lot to the bowlers, and the results were evident.”

3. Shami in ODIs

Mohammed Shami has been consistently giving his performances to Bengal's team in the domestic format to get a chance for a comeback to the Indian team. Even in the Ranji Trophy, he has managed to take 20 wickets till now as the tournament will be resuming

Mohammed Shami in ODIs:

  • Innings: 107
  • Overs: 887.4
  • Maidens: 52
  • Wickets: 206
  • Average: 24.50
  • Strike Rate: 5.58
  • Four-wicket Hauls: 10
  • Five-wicket Hauls: 6

Kaif still thinks that Shami should have received an opportunity to play for the Indian team in the ODI series. He has been the team's leading wicket-taker in the 2023 World Cup. Following this, he was also the highest wicket-taker for India in pacers during the Champions Trophy 2025. But since the win against New Zealand in the finals, he has not been picked by the selectors.
