Indian batter Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Shardul Thakur are set to compete in the Irani Trophy under Ajinkya Rahane's captaincy for the Mumbai team. Iyer, currently out of the Indian Test squad, is expected to play for Mumbai in their clash against the Rest of India from October 1 to 5 in Lucknow.

‌According to a report by Cricbuzz, Shreyas Iyer is set to play in the upcoming Irani Trophy after participating in the Duleep Trophy earlier this month. The report also mentioned that while the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has not yet announced its squad, both Shreyas and Shardul Thakur are expected to feature for Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai, under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane.

Shreyas Iyer has been out of the Indian Test lineup since playing in the second match of the five-Test series against England earlier this year. He featured in the game at Visakhapatnam but was left out of the following three matches, even after being declared fit from a back spasm. He also missed a few first-class matches during the last Ranji Trophy season and was not included in the BCCI’s central contracts list. His last game for India was in an ODI against Sri Lanka in early August.

Now back in the domestic circuit, Shreyas captained India D in the 2024 Duleep Trophy. With India facing a busy Test schedule over the next four months, the 29-year-old will be keen to earn his place back in the Test squad. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur, recovering from ankle surgery in June, has made his return. After participating in the KSCA tournament, he is expected to be available for the Irani Cup.

The report  also indicates that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will inaugurate the new National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru on September 28. BCCI secretary Jay Shah emphasized that the academy's state-of-the-art facilities will serve to benefit both current players and aspiring cricketers in the future.
