Coventry moved ten points clear at the top of the Championship after a 4-2 win over Middlesbrough. Ellis Simms and Liam Kitching scored twice each as Frank Lampard’s side reached 40 points from 17 games. Coventry now hold the biggest lead at this stage since 2004-05 and have won ten of their last eleven matches.
In the Championship race, Coventry strengthened their promotion push with a commanding 4-2 win over Middlesbrough that opened up a remarkable 10-point lead at the top after 17 games. Frank Lampard’s side raced to a 2-0 advantage inside 15 minutes through Ellis Simms and Liam Kitching, but Middlesbrough fought back as Morgan Whittaker scored and a Bobby Thomas own goal levelled the match early in the second half.
Coventry responded decisively in the closing stages, with Kitching scoring again in the 85th minute before Simms added his second a minute later to seal the victory. The result moved Coventry to 40 points, creating the largest lead at this stage of any Championship season since the league’s formation in 2004. The previous record was 6 points, held by Wolves in 2008-09 and Wigan in 2004-05.
Coventry have now won 10 of their last 11 matches and have scored 47 goals, 19 more than any other side, giving them a goal difference of 30. Despite the historic start, Lampard urged caution, acknowledging strong rivals like Stoke, Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Southampton. Pundits praised Lampard’s leadership, noting Coventry’s depth, balance and ability to manage games as they continue to look like genuine promotion contenders.
