For the second time this season, Inter Miami suffered a defeat as they went down 2-0 to Vancouver Whitecaps in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-finals. A record crowd of 53,837 at BC Place witnessed Lionel Messi struggle to influence the contest, missing a long-range attempt in the first half and failing to convert a late free-kick opportunity. Vancouver fans added to the heated atmosphere by booing Messi and waving Cristiano Ronaldo jerseys to taunt him. As he exited the pitch, Messi responded by pointing to his eyes, seemingly hinting at a comeback in the next game.
The Whitecaps took the lead in the 24th minute through Brian White, while Sebastian Berhalter doubled the advantage late in the second half, capitalising on Miami's defensive errors. The loss mirrored Inter Miami's earlier 1-0 setback against LAFC in the quarter-final first leg, though they managed a comeback in that tie with a 3-2 aggregate win.
After the defeat, Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano remained optimistic, emphasizing the need for his side to score at least two goals without conceding in the return leg. The second leg will be played at home in Florida on May 1, with Inter Miami aiming to overturn the deficit and book a spot in the final.
