The second Test between India and South Africa is around the corner, as the Indian team has made a massive change to their line-up. Shubman Gill, the Indian skipper, was ruled out of the game just hours before the match. And in his place, it that Rishabh Pant will be leading the team.
This also marks the debut of Rishabh Pant as a captain of the team in this format. He had been a stand-in captain in the T20I format, but this will be for the first time when he leads in the toughest format of the game. With the second match being at Guwahati, can Rishabh Pant start his captaincy stint by preventing India from losing the series.
1. Gill in Mumbai
Shubman Gill did not play for the majority of the first test. He played in the first innings, but when he came to bat, Gill was only able to play four balls. Due to a severe pain in his neck, he was immediately taken back to the pavilion and didn't come back in the entire game. It was also revealed that Shubman Gill has been hospitalized due to his injury.
While he was back from the hospital a few days ago, it was questionable whether he would play in the second Test or not. India had lost the first game by 30 runs, and fans consider that Shubman Gill missing out the game cost India the match. Taking a look at his injury, fans were a lot concerned and the a medical update.
The update said that a decision on Shubman Gill's availability for the second Test will be taken on the match day. He has also travelled with the Indian team to Guwahati, which made the fans wonder whether he will be playing or not. This story of has now taken a turn.
It was confirmed that Shubman Gill has travelled to Mumbai to consult with some doctors. Later, the BCCI also provided a notice on Shubman Gill's health, saying that he has been ruled out of the second Test. It was clear that Rishabh Pant will be leading the team in Gill's place.
2. Rishabh Pant’s Captaincy Debut
In place of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant has been announced as the new captain of the Indian team. The test match against South Africa at Guwahati will be Pant’s first Test match as a captain. This match has also made him in the longest format of the game.
With this, he has also been India's second wicket-keeper Test captain. He joins this elite list of leading the team as a wicket-keeper along with Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Fans would be excited to watch a wicket-keeper lead the Indian team in the longest format of the game after a long time. The last time a wicket-keeper had , it was back in 2014.
This ground is special for Rishabh Pant as he will be making his Test captaincy debut on the same. He also made his ODI debut for the Indian team in Guwahati in the match against West Indies. India was able to win this game by 8 wickets, with Virat Kohli leading the chase.
Pant said,“I feel, especially in red ball cricket, because it goes on for a longer period of time, small tactical changes can be overcome because it gives you time in the game. But at the same time you have to keep your emotions in check and don’t let the game drift away from you for too long. You try to be as close as to the game during the pressure situation.
