HH-W vs MR-W | Twitter confused as Heather Graham goes slow motion to miss tight opportunity

Cricket is always played in the moment, and Heather Graham would realise that after failing to capitalise on an opportunity in a WBBL game against Melbourne Renegades in Sydney. The Hobart Hurricanes' medium pacer was hesitant to clip the bails off in a close run-out chance involving Sarah Coyte.

‌Melbourne Renegades had a torrid start to their innings at North Sydney Oval after being put in by Hobart Hurricanes in a Women’s Big Bash League game on Thursday. The batting side slipped to 23/3 in the fourth over before a fifty-plus partnership between Alice Capsey (37) and Georgia Wareham (41), and an excellent power surge saw them reach 106/5 at the end of 12 overs.

But the frequent loss of wickets affected the prospects of the Melbourne-based outfit to finish on a high as two more wickets fell in the 16th and 17th over. And the Hurricanes had an opportunity to take one more in the penultimate ball of Heather Graham’s over, but she hesitantly slowed down to extend Sarah Coyte’s stay.

With the medium pacer bowling a short of a length delivery outside off stump, Deandra Dottin rocked back to pull the ball towards mid-wicket. Linsey Smith, who pulled off a blinder earlier in the game, ran towards her right and stopped the ball with an acrobatic effort.

She immediately got up and fired a throw towards the bowling end, where Graham waited with anticipation. But the bowler, thinking that the batter would make her ground easily, was hesitant as she stood a bit away from the stumps and slowed down after collecting the throw.

And eventually, when she clipped the bails off, Coyte had well made her ground with treplays showing that it would have been a close shave had Graham acted swiftly to break the stumps. The medium pacer, however, made amends as she cleaned up the dangerous-looking Dottin in the very next ball.

Twitter, though, was confused why the bowler shied away from breaking the stumps in the first instance that would have given them a wicket in the previous delivery too.
