AR Rahman joins as India's goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics

Days after saying he had received no intimation from the IOA, A.R. Rahman has agreed to be a goodwill ambassador of the Indian Olympic contingent. The Oscar-winning music composer became the 4th person to be appointed in this role, after Salman Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, and Abhinav Bindra.

Oscar-winning music composer A.R. Rahman has agreed to be a goodwill ambassador of the Indian contingent which will be participating in the Rio Olympics in August. 

“Its absolutely an honour and my pleasure to be a goodwill ambassador of the Indian Olympic contingent,” he said in his reply on Thursday to the request sent to him by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President N. Ramachandran, and Secretary General Rajeev Shukla.

The email message sent on his behalf by a member of his team, Karan Grover, said “I am super keen to support efforts that can help boost morale of all athletes and contestants and make our country proud by bringing home lots of medals.”

Oscar-winning music director A.R.Rahman, whose name has been mentioned for the Olympic ambassador role, has said that he has received no intimation from the IOA. Sachin Tendulkar and Abhinav Bindra were announced as the Olympic goodwill ambassadors, and it was expected that Rahman would join them.
