The Indian Olympic Association and the Hockey Federation of India have elected long-serving women team captain, Rani Rampal, as the flag bearer for India for the closing ceremony of the ongoing Asian Games in Indonesia.
After leading her country to a hard-fought silver medal, Rampal revealed that she could not have been happier at the announcement after she took to Twitter to thank the Indian governing bodies for her selection.
It’s a matter of great pride for me to be the flag bearer of our contingent during the closing ceremony of Asian Games today.I would like to thank IOA @ioaindia @TheHockeyIndia for giving me this opportunity,” the 23-year old tweeted.
Rampal & Co. narrowly missed out on a gold medal in Jakarta as they were beaten in the final of the women’s hockey event by Japan with a scoreline of 2-1. India had reached the Women’s Hockey final after a gap of almost 20 years. Rampal, who was playing despite an injury, was in tears after losing the final.
The Closing Ceremony took place at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium to officially mark the closing of the multi-sport tournament. India registered their highest Asiad medal haul in Indonesia with 69 medals – 15 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze.
