Real Madrid have stopped striker Gonzalo Garcia from joining Leeds United in January. The 21 year old impressed with 4 goals in 6 Club World Cup matches but has played only 122 La Liga minutes this season. Despite limited action, Xabi Alonso held talks with Garcia and insists he is important for the second half of the campaign. Leeds want attacking reinforcements after winning just 1 of their last 7 Premier League matches.
With the January window coming up, Real Madrid made a firm decision regarding the future of their rising striker Gonzalo Garcia. The 21-year-old had caught attention during the summer after scoring 4 goals in 6 matches at the Club World Cup, where he netted in every group stage game and played a key role in helping Los Blancos reach the semifinals. Although his influence dipped in the final four defeat to Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid later lost the final to Chelsea, his breakthrough performances marked him as one of the club’s most promising young forwards.
Reports from The Mirror revealed that Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso personally stepped in to block a proposed January loan move to Premier League side Leeds United. Despite Garcia featuring for only 122 minutes in La Liga this season and starting just 1 match, Alonso reportedly held face to face talks with the youngster to underline his importance to the squad for the second half of the campaign, especially with Kylian Mbappe leading the line.
Leeds, who have won only 1 of their last 7 league matches and struggled for goals, were eager to bolster their attack under Daniel Farke. However, Real Madrid’s stance means Garcia will remain at the Bernabeu as the club protects one of its top prospects.
