Manchester United Backs Old Trafford Regeneration Plan

Manchester United has welcomed the Greater Manchester Growth Plan, highlighting the Old Trafford Regeneration project. The scheme will feature a new 100,000-seat stadium, 15,000 homes, and a business and leisure district. Initial investment includes £26m for 382 homes at Trafford Wharf. Oxford Economics estimates the project could add £7.32 billion annually to the UK economy and create 91,600 jobs.

Having the Greater Manchester Growth Plan unveiled, Manchester United has expressed strong support for the Old Trafford Regeneration project, which is part of a 10-year strategy to boost economic growth and social development across the city region. The plan aims to transform Old Trafford into a major leisure and business hub, featuring a new 100,000-seat stadium and 15,000 homes. Mayor Andy Burnham called it the UK’s largest sports-led development since the London 2012 Olympics and confirmed Lord Sebastian Coe as Chair-designate of the Mayoral Development Corporation overseeing the project. 

An initial investment of £26 million has been committed for 382 new homes as part of the Trafford Wharf development, marking the first major step in the regeneration area. Manchester United COO Collette Roche emphasized the club’s ambition to create the world’s best football stadium, capable of hosting major international events such as the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup, within a vibrant district offering residential, business, and leisure opportunities supported by excellent transport links.

Oxford Economics previously projected that the Old Trafford Regeneration project could generate £7.32 billion annually for the UK economy and create 91,600 jobs. United aims to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the project delivers significant benefits to the surrounding community and the wider Greater Manchester region.
