Liverpool defender Virgi van Dijk has agreed a new mega deal at the club, that will keep him at the Merseyside for almost six more years. The bumper deal comes on the back of the £69 million benchmark that has been set by Manchester United centre back Harry Maguire’s record signing.

Virgil van Dijk is now set to stay at Liverpool for the best part of his career, after signing the new contract that includes improved wages as well. The Mirror reports that negotiations regarding the European Footballer of the Year’s extension at Liverpool had been going on all summer, but the representatives between the two parties have finally come to an agreement on a deal last week.

After signing from Southampton for £75 million just 20 months ago, van Dijk has grown immensely into the current Liverpool team and played an important part in the Red’s Champions League-winning campaign last season. Although the Dutch International’s contract at Liverpool will not expire before 2023, the new deal will tie him down to Anfield until 2025 and he will also earn £200,000-a-week now.

While the previous deal had a basic pay of £125,000-a-week along with additional bonuses coming from clean sheets and appearances, the new deal will see him secure a higher basic pay than before, with less focus on the add-ons. It is believed that Manchester United’s signing of Harry Maguire on a world-record deal paved the way for van Dijk’s representatives to upgrade his package.
