Ireland beat Bangladesh by 39 runs in the first of the three-match T20I series in Chattogram. Harry Tector’s unbeaten half-century took Ireland to 181/4 before Matthew Humphreys and Barry McCarthy picked up seven wickets together to restrict the hosts despite Towhid Hridoy’s half-century.
After being put into bat at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium, openers Paul Stirling and Tim Tector gave a flying start, adding 40 runs in 26 balls, as the visitors reached 48/1 at the end of the powerplay. Tim and his brother Harry Tector kept the scoreboard ticking before the former departed after hitting six boundaries during his 19-ball 32. Harry, however, kept going and admirably shifted gears to complete his half-century in 37 balls. He smashed two sixes off pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib in the final over to help the visitors end on a high at 181/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Harry smashed five sixes and a boundary during his unbeaten knock of 69 off 45 balls, while Tanzim was the pick among the hosts’ bowlers with a spell of 2/41 in four overs.
In return, the home side’s top order slumped as left-arm spinner Humphreys dismissed opener Tanzid Hasan in the first over. Pacer Mark Adair also joined in with two wickets in his first two overs as the Tigers ended the powerplay at 20/4. There was no coming back from that as the side could manage just 142/9 in their allotted 20 overs. The hosts would have finished with an even embarrassing loss if not for Towhid Hridoy’s lone act of defiance. The middle-order batter hit seven fours and three sixes to remain unbeaten on 83 off 50 balls to help his side go past the 100-run mark. But the fact that only two other batters, apart from Hridoy, managed double-digit scores did not help Bangladesh’s cause. Humphreys had impressive figures of 4/13 in four overs, while McCarthy and Adair finished with 3/23 and 2/20, respectively.
