AB de Villiers has commented on the captaincy of Temba Bavuma. With Bavuma breaking the wait for South Africa's Test series win in India, everyone was impressed. For this win, AB de Villiers has drawn a comparison between a former Indian captain and Temba Bavuma.
Temba Bavuma has lately been on the headlines for his record as a captain. He led South Africa to win the World Test Championship, and now he has helped the team to win its first Test series in India in 25 years. The win was a lot impressive for the Proteas, and it had of all former South African players.
AB de Villiers looks to be the happiest person right now, watching the success of South Africa. He has been a part of the team for almost two decades, but never got an opportunity to see this level of success. Following the Test series against India, de Villiers has put Temba Bavuma in the same bracket as a former Indian captain.
AB de Villiers was present in an interview, where he praised the captaincy of Temba Bavuma. He talked about the strategies and tactics of Bavuma which has helped South Africa to reach new heights in the Test format. Along with that, he said that Bavuma reminds him of MS Dhoni, as he never raised voice a on the field, and maintained his cool in the game.
He said, “South Africa lost that one Test in Pakistan which I think they should never have lost. But he didn’t play that Test, so he got off. I mean he surprised all of us. I’ve been in connection with my friends for years, for the first few years that he was named captain and I even was hesitant to say you know what I’m very confident about the call. Maybe it comes back to that old phrase, ‘You can’t judge a book by its cover’. He doesn’t look big like Greame Smith with a whole aura walking and that presence where he can be intimidating.”
AB de Villiers was present with Ravichandran Ashwin, as Ashwin posted the video on his YouTube channel. Not only did he praise the captaincy of Temba Bavuma, he put him in the same bracket as MS Dhoni. This shows the legacy which has been left by Dhoni as a captain, from the game long back.
De Villiers continued by saying, “Temba is very, very small. He’s a soft-spoken guy and hardly ever raises his voice. It just shows you the different styles of captaincy can be successful. I think it’s similar for MS Dhoni maybe back in the day also. I hardly ever heard his voice. He was quite calm, didn’t speak much but when he did speak, I think people listened to him. I think that might be a similar case with Temba.”
Ravichandran Ashwin also asked de Villiers how the team managed to play spin so well. The last time South Africa visited India, it was challenging for them to secure a win on the Indian soil. But now, they came back to the country after years and went on to secure India at their own home soil.
, “I think it’s a combination of both. The players have sort of got more exposure over the last while and got better in sub-continent conditions. You saw Team India go to England not long ago and looked completely at home with short-ball stuff and moving deliveries off the seamers. So, that is one element thereof and other one I feel is just really finding yourself in a group of players where there is a solid game plan and belief. I think that’s the case with de Zorzi. He looks around him and goes 'you know my role is incredibly clear because of good leadership.’”
De Villiers also said that the IPL has helped the Proteas to play spin better. He continued by saying,“Also, I think there’s been a lot of emphasis over the last 10 years on South African players to play spin better. That has obviously changed because of T20s and IPL, formats like that showing different kinds of skillsets.”
When South Africa last visited India for a Test series, it came back in 2019. At that time, India was able to win all the three games of the Test series, with Virat Kohli leading the Indian side. And the spinners did play a vital role in the same, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja leading
Ashwin was able to take 15 wickets in the series, while Jadeja took 13 wickets. It should also be noted that India won two out of the three games by an innings, as they had sent South Africa to a follow-on. Moreover, South Africa even struggled to take all wickets down of the Indian team in the entire series.
