India suffered a terrific loss at home in the series against South Africa. This has led to questions on the Head Coach of the team Gautam Gambhir and his future. Reportedly, the BCCI has taken a decision on his future with the team across formats.
The Indian team has come out to be dominant in the limited overs format. But they are going through an unreal downfall in the Test format, which hurts the fans to a great extent. Over the last three series played by India at its home, against South Africa and New Zealand with a whitewash.
It was a disappointing moment for the fans and players, as India has never gone this bad at home in the Test format. Following the loss in the second Test against South Africa, there were questions on the future of Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of the Indian team. And it is now being reported that the BCCI has taken a call on the same.
Gautam Gambhir had tremendous success in the Indian Premier League 2024 edition. He went on to lead Kolkata Knight Riders to win their third title, as he stood with them as a mentor. Now, with Rahul Dravid's time as a Head Coach coming to an end, the BCCI approached Gautam Gambhir after Dravid.
He took over as India's Head Coach from July 2024, and has done well in the limited overs. But in the Test format, India has suffered a lot. The only series wins India has secured with Gambhir as a Head Coach came against Bangladesh and West Indies. India recently lost the second Test against South Africa, providing them at home.
According to the reports, the BCCI is currently not eager to make any changes to the Coaching Department for Gautam Gambhir. This means his contract remains till 2027, and he will be a part of the team till the World Cup and World Test Championship final. Along with that, another reason for not having any decision on Gambhir is that the T20 World Cup also remains in the corner.
Gautam Gambhir was present in the post match conference when India had suffered a whitewash in the series against South Africa. It was for the first time in 25 years that India had ended up losing a Test series against South Africa at home. Gautam Gambhir, being the Head Coach of the team came up to take the blame of the loss which by the team.
Along with that, he was also questioned by the reporters about his future with the team. He said,“It is for the BCCI to decide. I have said this before as well, Indian cricket is important, I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England, won the Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning. Blame lies with everyone, starts with me.”
The Indian team is not having a good record in the Test format with Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach. This has been one of the major reasons why there have been calls to remove him from this post. Along with that, the Indian team is also going through a transition period due to which they are unable at the home conditions.
India had been undefeated in home series for more than a decade, with the last series loss coming in 2012. When Gambhir had his second Test series as a Head Coach, it was against New Zealand. India ended up losing this series in a whitewash, as New Zealand won all the three games. This was in a home series in 12 years.
Along with that, India had never lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy since 2015. But the team ended up losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 by 3-1, losing it for the first time in Australia since the last two fours.
