India ended day one of the first Test against South Africa at an advantageous position at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday. Pacer Jasprit Bumrah registered a five-wicket haul to bowl out the visitors for 159 in their first essay before bad light ended proceedings with hosts at 37/1.

‌Jasprit Bumrah headlined India’s dominant display on the first day of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata on Friday. The pacer picked up his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests to skittle out the visitors for a modest total before India batted out 20 overs to end the day at 37/1, still 122 runs behind.

The Proteas had an electric start after opting to bat at Eden Gardens, with openers Ryan Rickelton and Aiden Markram (31) collectively hitting eight fours and a six in the first 10 overs to take the side to 57/0. With Indian skipper Shubman Gill choosing to continue his pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah for a sixth over, the move worked wonders for the home side. Bumrah went past his Mumbai Indians teammate Rickelton’s defence to disturb his off-stump with a jaffa before packing off fellow opener Markram with a rising delivery in his next. Soon, captain Temba Bavuma also followed suit, edging Kuldeep Yadav to Dhruv Jurel at leg slip. Wiaan Mulder (24) and Tony de Zorzi (24) had promising starts as they ensured the Proteas did not lose another wicket and took the side to lunch at 105/3.

However, their 43-run stand was broken immediately after the break, with Kuldeep trapping Mulder after he failed to connect a reverse sweep. The departure of his partner had an impact on de Zorzi, as he also departed within three overs of Mulder’s return. The freefall continued with Mohammed Siraj picking up two wickets in one over, and tea being taken immediately after Corbin Bosch was caught plumb in front by Axar Patel to leave the visitors reeling at 154/8.

The visitors’ innings ended early in the third session at 159 after Bumrah returned to clean up the tail. The pacer ended with figures of 5/27, while Siraj and Kuldeep had two to their names.

In response, the Indian duo of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal started cautiously, with the latter playing out a maiden off Marco Jansen first up. The first boundary came off Jaiswal’s bat in the fifth over, with the southpaw hitting two more in the next two in an attempt to get a move on. But Jansen had the last laugh as the young opener played on, trying to go for a cut off a ball very close to his body. However, Rahul and new batter Washington Sundar continued to show restraint as the hosts ended the day without further loss, when bad light forced play to end before time.
