Zimbabwe showed a resilient front in the morning session on Day 3 of the one-off Test against England as the side went the first 20 overs unbeaten, recovering well from the loss of two early wickets in their follow-on innings. Sean Williams took charge straightaway under the clouds and against the swinging ball with a brilliant counter-attack while Ben Curran resolutely kept the ball out to stitch together a century stand. However, just when the duo had begun to inspire hopes of a famous draw as the weather grew ominous, a heart-stopping moment arrived and led to some brilliant theatre at Trent Bridge.
Shoaib Bashir, in his first spell off the innings, trundled in from around the wicket in the 31st over and on the fourth ball floated a drifter across Curran that pitched on a length on leg stump. The opener had taken a big stride forward to play the sweep, but was undone by the slight turn as the Duke's thumped into his pad and sent England into a loud appeal. Dharmasena took a long think before ultimately raising his finger, much to the surprise of Curran who after a long consultaiton with Williams opted for the review. The replays showed that the ball had pitched in line -- which was never a doubt -- and straightened just enough to make impact in-line. It was all the evidence Curran needed to begin walking-off, only to be left with mouth agape when Hawk-Eye showed that the red cherry had bounced over the stumps.
The youngster made a hasty U-turn with the Chevron fans' deafening roar echoing around the ground, the sheer sound of it even making Dharmasena smirk while he signalled the reversed decision. Twitterati was all joy after the incident.
