IPL 2025 | Rain in Bengaluru disrupts IPL restart as KKR’s playoff hopes vanish

After a nine-day break, IPL was all set to resume with Kolkata Knight Riders facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Unfortunately, a packed Chinnaswamy crowd could only wait and were left disappointed as heavy rain in Bengaluru led to the abandonment of the game, with both teams sharing a point each.

‌The highly anticipated return of the IPL after nine days ended in utter disappointment as rain caused the match to be abandoned. The Garden City had been battered by heavy showers over the past few days, with rain forecast again for today. Dark clouds loomed over the stadium around 6 PM, followed by a heavy downpour shortly after. At around 8:35, there was a brief moment of hope when the rain eased, only to worsen again. A large crowd gathered eagerly to watch the game, many donning India’s Test whites bearing Virat Kohli’s name and number on their backs, honouring the Indian batsman who retired from Test cricket on May 12.

The relentless rain continued to pour heavily across the city, and at around 10:23 PM, match officials decided to call off the game, awarding one point to each side. It was a crushing blow for KKR, who were knocked out of the tournament. With 12 points and one match remaining, their maximum possible total of 14 falls short of a playoff spot. Earlier in the season, they also lost a game to rain against the Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens.

Meanwhile, RCB’s chances of making the playoffs improved, climbing to the top of the standings with 17 points. They now stand a strong chance of finishing in the top two.
