Women’s Big Bash League: Matthew Mott appointed as Sydney Sixers Head Coach

‌Matthew Mott was appointed as the head coach of the Sydney Sixers team for two years ahead of the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League. The former England white-ball coach will take over the team from Charlotte Edwards, who took over the reins of the England Women’s cricket team earlier this year.

The Australian was the assistant coach of the Sydney Sixers Men’s cricket team in the last edition of Big Bash League and will continue to assist Greg Shipperd in the next season too.

"I'm absolutely delighted to be working with the Sixers women's team. I've had a strong connection with the club over many years, so when the opportunity came up, it was one I was really keen to take on,” Mott said after his appointment. 

Mott marks his return to the women’s game after a gap of more than three years when he had a successful stint with the Australian Women’s team winning consecutive T20 World Cups in 2018 and 2020 before going on to win the ODI World Cup in 2022. He then took charge of the England Men’s white-ball team, leading them to their second World T20 title later in the same year.

Mott has been active in the franchise cricket front after ending his tenure as England's coach after the T20 World Cup in 2024. He is currently working as the Assistant Coach of Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and will also coach the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket this year.

Sydney Sixers finished sixth in the eight-team WBBL last year with their last title coming in the 2017-18 season. Mott’s appointment comes ahead of the WBBL draft next month where Sixers will have the first pick.
