ENG vs IND | Twitter in splits as Jadeja-Sundar turn away from Stokes’ handshake request

Test matches are often called off when rival captains agree on a draw when there is no realistic chance of a result. But Ben Stokes faced the embarrassment of not getting a handshake from India during the Old Trafford Test, with Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar nearing well-deserved centuries.

‌India did well to come out of a troublesome position on the final day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester. Shubman Gill completed a gritty century early in the day before getting out towards the end of the first session to hand the home team an upper hand at lunch.

But the left-handed duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar batted out of their skin to help the visitors remain wicketless in the second session. They completed their half-centuries and also brought up their 100-run association as India led the hosts at tea.

Just as things were not going England’s way, even in the final session, captain Ben Stokes came up to the umpires and the Indian duo asking for a handshake to end the Test match. But the duo, after a thankless job of saving the side from defeat, were in their 80s and looking well-set to reach their three-figure marks, declined Stokes’ request and decided to continue.

Even the Indian captain Gill was watching the proceedings from the dressing room with a stone face and wanted both to continue with the game. The England captain and his team were not impressed with the Indian duo’s slow approach, with one of the players asking them, ‘How much more time do they want, an hour?’.

Just as the players surrounded to trade barbs at the Indian batters, Jadeja rightly pointed out that it is not his decision, as the umpires asked the players to continue with the game. Eventually, both players got to memorable hundreds, and the players agreed to a draw. Twitter was in splits as Ben Stokes faced embarrassment for his untimely request for a draw.
