England ended day one of the second Ashes Test against Australia in Brisbane at 325/9 on Thursday. Joe Root scored his 40th Test ton to remain unbeaten on 135, while left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc continued his red-hot form with a splendid spell of 6/71 in the pink-ball Test at the Gabba.

‌Joe Root broke the Australian hoodoo with his maiden Test Hundred Down Under in the second Test in Brisbane on Thursday. The England batter hit 15 fours and a six during his unbeaten knock of 135 as the visitors ended day one of the pink-ball Test at 325/9 in 74 overs. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc was also in the limelight as the left-arm pacer picked up his 18th five-wicket haul in Tests and also went past the legendary Wasim Akram’s count of 414 wickets during his spell of 6/71.

After opting to bat at the Gabba, the visitors were put on the back foot early on in the game with Starc continuing his exploits with the new ball. The left-arm pacer sent Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope packing, for ducks, in his first two overs, to reduce England to 5/2. However, Crawley kept up his aggressive intent throughout to take England out of the initial trouble. After opening the scoring with a four off Starc in the first over, the England batter hit two more off Michael Neser to take the side forward, alongside Joe Root. Meanwhile, Root looked assured from the other end, hitting the odd boundaries as the side went past the 50-run mark in the 11th over. The England opener completed his half-century, in just 68 balls, on the stroke of tea as the visitors walked back with the score reading 98/2 after 24 overs.

Crawley started from where he left off in the first session with two boundaries off Brendan Doggett in the first over after the restart. But the visitors’ opener fell for 76 from 93 balls, against the run of play, three overs later, getting an underedge while going for a pull against Neser. Harry Brook kept the momentum going with his aggressive display, while Root held fort from the other end. The former England skipper completed his half-century with a single off Doggett in the 33rd over, and just as things started settling down, Brook (31) perished trying to chase a widish delivery from Starc. That broke the 54-run stand for the fourth wicket as England walked in for dinner at a tricky 196/4, with captain Ben Stokes giving company to Root in the middle.

Stokes (19) looked nicely settled during his 49-ball innings before a mix-up with senior mate Root and an excellent fielding effort from Josh Inglis ended his stay. From 210/4, England slid to 264/9 in the gap of 12 overs as the home side looked to assert their dominance on the opening day. However, Root, who completed his 40th Test century, in between all the chaos, was still there in the middle and, in the company of Jofra Archer, took the side past the 300-run mark. The pair added an unbeaten 61 runs in an entertaining stand for the final wicket and ensured that the side were not bowled out inside the first day.
