Jonny Bairstow to play for Yorkshire in County Championship after Test squad snub

Jonny Bairstow is preparing to represent Yorkshire in the upcoming County Championship matches as red-ball domestic cricket resumes following a six-week break. Bairstow was sidelined from England’s red-ball team with Jamie Smith being favoured by the management as the Three Lions wicket-keeper.

‌The right-handed wicket-keeper batter missed England’s home season following underwhelming performances during the tour of India and the Ashes. In those series, Bairstow managed three fifties in 19 innings and failed to reach double figures on four occasions. His recent struggles in white-ball cricket have further diminished his standing, causing him to drop down the selection hierarchy.

As per an ESPNcricinfo report, Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson said, “ I spoke to Jonny, and he still has ambitions of getting back into the England team. When he was coming back from his injury last year, our medical team and coaches – everybody associated with the club – helped him get back into the England fold.”

He further added, “ If it’s that we need to do that again with him, give him some love and get him into a position where he puts good performances in, everybody benefits from that. Jonny Bairstow is a serious cricketer anyway, but when he has a point to prove, he’s even more dangerous. Hopefully, we can take advantage of that.”

The 34-year-old has achieved 100 Test appearances for England but was omitted from the series victory over the West Indies and has also been left out of the squad for the forthcoming matches against Sri Lanka.
