Blow to KKR as Andre Russell ruled out with hamstring injury

After Chris Lynn gave Kolkata Knight Riders a real scare with yet another shoulder injury recently it is now Andre Russell, another of their retained stars, who is doubtful for IPL next month. The Islamabad United player suffered a hamstring injury while fielding against Karachi Kings last week.

A closer look at the KKR squad and one would realize that Jacques Kallis and co. have taken a huge gamble this season, banking on an unproven blend of experience, stardom and youngsters in the side. While this might seem a full-proof strategy to many, it would hardly be effective if their core players were absent from the squad.

Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa and Russell are four major players for the two-time IPL champions and they had to splurge aplenty to retain their services. And now, with two of the top players hugely doubtful even before the season starts, KKR are staring into the abyss.

Russel has been playing for Islamabad United this season, where he got off to a flying start with four wickets and 82 runs to his name so far. He also created headlines recently by pulling off a thrilling last-ball six against Lahore Qalandars in the super-over. Now, with their star all-rounder out of the season, ISU will have to look elsewhere.

"Russell was injured during the game against Karachi Kings and MRI results were not encouraging. He will not take any further part in the tournament," an Islamabad United official was quoted, reported Geo.TV.

The Indian Premier League will commence from April 7 and Russell could be missing the initial few games alongside Lynn. The Knight Riders kick off their campaign against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
